The evolution of 2CV steering wheels
When production of the 2CV A began on 11 July 1949, it was equipped with a steering wheel/steering column assembly forming a single black-painted metal part. The steering wheel had two spokes, an external diameter of 42 cm and drove the rack, the
steering tie-rod (track rod lever) and
the steering axis via a seven-tooth control pinion. The
steering column part is attached to the bottom of the dashboard by a U-shaped flat sheet metal collar via a fixed tube.
In September 1960, the black colour was replaced by the famous Gris Rosé AC 136. The 2CV vans, whose steering wheel/column assembly had adopted the Gris Clair AC 132 in August 1954, also switched to Gris Rosé at this time.
The arrival of the 2CV AZAM in 1963 marked the first appearance of a removable steering wheel on the 2CV. The colour of the steering wheel also changed over the years and between versions. In February 1970, Citroën relaunched the 2CV and replaced the 2CV AZLP, with a 425cc engine, with two new models, the 2CV 4, with a 435cc engine, and the 2CV 6, with a 602cc engine. For these new saloons, Citroën chose to use the same dashboard as the 2CV AZAM Export of 1967, with a few minor differences. The only difference was that the manufacturer opted for a blue-grey Quillery bakelite steering wheel instead of the black one used on the AZAM. This colour was later replaced by various colour changes over the years and the limited series that accompanied the 2CV until the end of its production in 1990. On our
technical website (in French), you can find out about the various steering wheel models that have evolved over the history of the 2CV.

Which steering wheel model for your 2CV?
The choice of steering wheel model for your 2CV depends on its year of production, or the interior ambience, look or personality you want to give it.
For years of production:
- The metal steering wheel + steering column (
ref 3005250) fitted most 2CVs up to the mid-1960s, some 2CV sedan models up to 1970 and 2CV vans up to 1975
- The removable bakelite steering wheel appeared from 1963 and was fitted to 2CV sedan and van models until the mid-1970s
- The brown single-spoke steering wheel (ref 1005611) was fitted only to 2CV 6 models between July 1973 and June 1976
- The black single-spoke steering wheel (ref 1005608) followed to equip all 2CV 6 models from July 1976, then all 2CV6 Club and 2CV Charleston models
- The 2-spoke plastic steering wheel (ref 1005606) appeared in July 1975 on the 2CV AZU and AK 400, before becoming standard on all models not fitted with the black single-spoke steering wheel until the legendary Citroën ended production in 1990.
For those who prefer a premium vintage look, we recommend our wooden steering wheels, including the 38 cm diameter rivet steering wheel (ref 1005631) or our even more upmarket black or brown leather steering wheels, which come with a leather gear knob and handbrake handle.
Finally, the sports steering wheel (ref 1005602), with a diameter of 35 cm, is perfectly suited to all those who race their 2CV, as it ensures optimum rigidity and handling.
