There is a wide range of parts and equipment dedicated to the steering of the Mehari on our site specialising in the small collectable Citroëns. This section is organised around 4 main product families: steering columns and all their peripheral parts such as anti-theft devices, steering racks, king pins and finally, steering wheels and steering wheel accessories.
A unique offer for Mehari steering with exclusive original parts
Like the 2CV from which it is derived, the Mehari has undergone several changes in the spare parts that make up its steering. The first examples produced between 1969 and 1974 were equipped with a 7-tooth steering pinion, which operated a specific model of
rack and pinion. Citroën then switched to an eight-tooth pinion for greater flexibility and a better turning radius, with a new rack and pinion design. There is a small difference between the 2CV and the Mehari: while the pinion on the 2CV is fixed directly to the end of the column, the pinion on the Mehari is connected to the column by a drive shaft. Indeed, the driving position having been moved back on this car, the angle of the column is less vertical. You will find all these car parts in our online shop, as well as almost all the essential steering components such as
king pins and track rod, the latter combining the functions of the connecting rod and ball joint in a single part. Also, the track rod ends or steering arm/bar ends depending on the designation, the arm or rack end springs, the ball joint gaiters. Also multiple rings, seals, stops, pushers or tubes intervening at the level of the steering rack or column.
Operation and maintenance of your Mehari steering system
No power steering or hydraulic equipment for the
Mehari. Forget about the pump, steering box, stabiliser bar and other various bearings found in contemporary cars. It is a purely mechanical system with two steered wheels at the front, a column in direct contact with the pinion and the rack, the latter activating the track rods attached to the wheel via the steering arms and king pins.
Please refer to our technical diagrams and in particular the one dedicated to the Mehari
steering arms and axis (in French) to have a more precise vision of the assembly of these different spare parts.
In terms of use, one of the most important points is to have a good parallelism. This can be adjusted by adjusting the track rod sleeve linking the track rod to the track rod end, also known as steering arm end. Also check the condition of track rod gaiter and grease your ball joints/levers without disassembling them, using the track rod end castle nut with integrated grease nipple.
Customise your steering wheel and secure your Mehari
To give your car a premium look, we also offer a wide range of Mehari
steering wheels, hubs and steering wheel covers. First of all, the traditional two-spoke steering wheel in bakelite, but also wooden or leather models matched with various gear knobs. Finally, an essential accessory, the steering lock, to be coupled to the special Mehari 3-wire
ignition contact drum and whose U-bolt also serves to hold the lock on the column and to fix the steering column. Consult our
technical exploded view (in French) for more details.
